The story

A condominium brings separate ownership together with shared control: the name was formed in Latin from con-, “together,” and dominium, “dominion” or “ownership,” giving the sense “joint dominion.” English borrowed the Latin word. It was used from the 18th century for territory under the joint sovereignty of two or more countries. From the 20th century, it also named a residential arrangement in which units are individually owned while parts of the property are shared.
