The story

Kurfuffle is an alternative spelling of kerfuffle, an informal word for a disorderly outburst or commotion. Kerfuffle has been in use since the 19th century. Its origin is uncertain: one proposed explanation derives it from Scots curfuffle, as a formation equivalent to ker- plus fuffle; another connects it with Irish cíor thuathail, “confusion, bewilderment.” A resemblance to modern Welsh cythrwfl, meaning “uproar, trouble, agitation,” has also been noted.
