In 1894, botanists meeting in Madison were looking for a name that would separate plants’ light-powered chemistry from the older, vaguer word “assimilation.” Dr. Barnes proposed “photosyntax,” but Professor MacMillan countered with “photosynthesis,” borrowing the German Photosynthese and pairing light with the Greek idea of “putting together.” That Greek root, *dhe-*—“to set or place”—also lies behind the ancient verb tithēmi, so a green leaf is etymologically a tiny workshop where ingredients are set together. The word is therefore almost a miniature recipe: photo- supplies the light, while synthesis names the assembly line that turns carbon dioxide and water into chemical fuel—and, as a useful bonus, oxygen for nearly everyone else.
