Picture the ground behaving like a badly shaken table, sending invisible ripples through the planet. The Greek word σεισμός, seismós, named that shaking; it is the source of the scientific combining form seismo-. The second half, -logy, comes from Greek λόγος, lógos—originally a word, account, or explanation—so seismology is, quite literally, an organized account of shaking. The term entered English scientific vocabulary in 1852, when earthquakes were still often treated as mysterious acts of nature rather than measurable physical events. And a small trap is hiding in the spelling: this -logy has nothing to do with the separate English adjective logy, meaning sluggish or dull, which may be related to Dutch log “heavy, dull.” Seismology is therefore not the study of sluggishness; it is the disciplined art of listening to the Earth’s sudden stories.
