A vertebra is not merely a stackable bone; it is engineered with little projections that clasp its neighbors like the wooden ends of a yoke. That image is preserved in the Greek word zygon, “yoke,” which also gives us zygomatic—the cheekbone that looks as though it helps hold the face together—and zygote, two cells joined into one beginning. The middle element, apo, means “off” or “away,” while physis means “growth” or “that which has grown,” so the anatomical name points to a growth projecting from the vertebra and helping it lock against the next one. Anatomists turned such Greek building blocks into a precise international vocabulary, especially during the great expansion of comparative anatomy in the nineteenth century. The plural ending is equally Greek-looking: one zygapophysis becomes several zygapophyses, pronounced with a final “-seez,” as though the bones themselves were quietly forming a miniature Greek chorus.
