The story
A fez is a flat-topped felt hat finished with a tassel. English took the word from Ottoman Turkish فس (fes), the name for the hat. The hat was named after Fez, Morocco, where the dye used to color it was extracted from crimson berries. The distinctive name thus links the headwear to the Moroccan city associated with its dye. Norman Lindsay’s A Curate in Bohemia includes a recorded use of fez in 1913; the book was published in 1932.
